Wax/resin (W/R) ribbon is the middle grade of the three thermal transfer ribbon grades, suited in Zebra's classification to coated paper and matte synthetics. GoodLabel lists this 300M ribbon for YUPO in its product name, and widths come in 8 sizes from 40mm to 110mm in 10mm steps.
Criteria for using wax/resin on the 6 YUPO label sizes
GoodLabel YUPO labels (6 sizes from 50×30mm to 100×100mm) are waterproof synthetic paper labels that need a ribbon to print. The wax 74M and 300M product names also list YUPO, but in Zebra's classification, matte synthetics are grouped as suitable starting from wax/resin (6100, etc.).
- For YUPO labels that hands or box edges rub often, such as 70×40mm asset management labels, move up to wax/resin. Zebra 6100 wax/resin is made to resist smudging and scratching on coated paper and matte synthetics.
- For labels that contact water, detergent or solvents, also start from wax/resin. The 6100 use table includes labels exposed to solvents and chemicals, and labels exposed to water, steam, and alkaline and acidic solutions.
- The transportation and logistics section of the 6100 use table also lists outdoor labels in extreme environments.
- For long exposure to strong chemicals, or for PET and silver matte labels, go one grade up to resin ribbon 300M. The comparison table of materials and chemical resistance for the three grades, wax, wax/resin and resin, is on the resin ribbon page.

OUTSIDE marks the ink side wound on the outside of the roll, so it loads without changing direction on the TSC TE210, which accepts ink-side-out 300m ribbons on 1-inch cores. The 300M core and outer diameter requirements for the Zebra ZD421T and TE210 are the same as in the loading requirements table on the wax ribbon page.
Checking the first label in GoodLabel Designer after changing grade
Even when you replace wax 300M with W/R 300M, leave the Print method field in Printer settings at Thermal transfer. Right after the change, set Copies in the Print window to 1, print just one label, and scan it with a scanner to check that the barcode bars on the YUPO label have no breaks. FAQ
- Are there criteria for printing 50×30 YUPO labels with wax/resin instead of wax?
- If the labels are often rubbed or come into contact with water, detergent or solvents, move up to wax/resin. In Zebra's classification, matte synthetics are suitable starting from wax/resin, and wax is for places with little chemical exposure or abrasion.
- Can I use it for labels applied outdoors?
- The use list for Zebra 6100 wax/resin includes labels for extreme outdoor environments. The condition holds when used with synthetic labels such as YUPO, not paper labels.
- Which W/R width variant goes with 70×40 YUPO labels?
- The YUPO label set pairs 5 rolls of 70×40 labels with an 80mm ribbon, so choose the 80mm x300M W/R variant as well. 60mm for 50×30, 90mm for 80×60 and 80×100, and 100mm for 100×80 and 100×100 are the same widths as in the sets.
- Is wax/resin enough for silver matte or PET labels?
- GoodLabel lists silver matte, PET and clear labels in the resin ribbon product name, and Zebra's classification also assigns synthetic materials in general to resin. For those labels, choose resin 300M.
