ITW wax ribbon
A wax-grade ribbon for thermal transfer printing on paper labels such as art paper. 74M comes in 60, 80 and 100mm widths and 300M in 8 widths from 40 to 110mm; 300M rolls are wound ink side out. For YUPO labels exposed to scratches or chemicals, the 300M wax/resin and resin grades fit.

GoodLabel wax ribbon (brand listed as ITW) is the wax grade among the three grades of thermal transfer ribbon (wax, wax/resin, resin), used for paper labels. The 74M product comes in 60, 80 and 100mm widths, and the 300M product in 8 widths from 40mm to 110mm in 10mm steps.

The 74M product names the Zebra desktop TLP, GC, GK and GX series as target models. For printers that accept 300m rolls, the 300M product reduces the number of changes; on the Zebra ZD421, one 300m ribbon roll covers 4 rolls of media and 74m covers 1 roll.

Choose the ribbon width from the 10mm-step variants so that it is wider than the media width including the liner, which reduces printhead wear. For example, a roll with 55mm-wide media takes the 60mm variant, and a 104mm roll takes the 110mm variant.
Pairing wax ribbon with label materials
In Zebra's certified ribbon classification, the wax grade is grouped as a high-speed printing ribbon for paper materials, and its chemical and abrasion resistance is the lowest of the three grades. The uses listed in the same classification are shipping and receiving labels, retail price tags and tags, and inventory tracking labels, labels that are not rubbed for long. The ZD421T and TE210 that take this product print at up to 6ips (about 152mm/s) at 203dpi.
Both the 74M and 300M product names list use on YUPO along with art paper. In Zebra's certified ribbon classification, however, synthetic materials such as YUPO belong to wax/resin (matte synthetics) or resin (synthetics in general), so for YUPO label rolls exposed to scratches, alcohol or chemicals, move up one grade.
Do not load a ribbon for direct thermal paper such as GoodLabel direct thermal roll labels. Direct thermal media turns black from printhead heat alone and needs no ribbon.
GoodLabel Designer Printer settings
- After loading a 300M or 74M ribbon, select Thermal transfer for Print method in Printer settings; ZPL printers receive the ^MTT command and TSPL printers SET RIBBON ON with the print job.
- If Print method is set to "Printer settings", the Designer does not send a method command, and the printer prints with its stored method.
- If text is faint or breaks up, raise Density. The range is 0–30 (default 21) for ZPL printers and 0–15 (default 11) for TSPL printers.
- When you remove the ribbon roll and switch to direct thermal paper, set Print method back to Direct thermal (^MTD, SET RIBBON OFF).

FAQ
- Do I use this ribbon on direct thermal paper labels too?
- No. Direct thermal paper turns black from printhead heat alone and needs no ribbon; ribbons are used only on thermal transfer label rolls such as art paper.
- Can I print YUPO labels with a wax ribbon?
- The product name lists use on YUPO along with art paper. However, in Zebra's certified ribbon classification, synthetic materials belong to wax/resin and resin, so for YUPO labels that get scratched or come into contact with alcohol or chemicals, use a wax/resin or resin ribbon.
- What ribbon width do I choose for a 55mm-wide media roll?
- The 60mm variant. Choosing the closest width wider than the media width including the liner reduces printhead wear, and for a 104mm-wide roll the 110mm variant is the right fit.
- Should I buy the 74M or the 300M product?
- 74M is for the Zebra TLP, GC, GK and GX series named in its product name. The Zebra ZD421T takes 300m ribbons with a 25.4mm inner diameter and 66mm or smaller outer diameter using the included adapter, and the TSC TE210 takes 300m ribbons on a 1-inch core with 67mm or smaller outer diameter.
- Text on the first label is faint and breaks up in places.
- First check that Print method in GoodLabel Designer Printer settings is Thermal transfer, then raise density one step at a time in the Print window or lower the speed below 3 and print again. Also check that the ribbon is not narrower than the media.
