Bixolon XT5-40 label printer
The XT5-40 is a Bixolon 4-inch industrial 203dpi printer running up to 14ips (356mm/s), with a 104mm print width, 4,000mm labels and Gigabit Ethernet as standard. Per the spec sheet it supports BPL-Z (ZPL II) for GoodLabel Designer's XT5-40 entry; its emulation menu has auto and BPL-D.

The XT5-40 is the 203dpi model among Bixolon's 4-inch industrial printers, and its biggest difference is a speed of up to 14ips (356mm/s). The print width is 104mm (832 dots), a single label can be up to 4,000mm long, and it comes with USB, serial, Gigabit Ethernet and 2 USB hosts as standard.
The Designer's Speed and Density fields and the printer menu
The Speed field in GoodLabel Designer's Print window ranges from 1–14 (default 3), and the number is added before the first label of a job as the ZPL ^PR command. The XT5-40's speed menu is 2–14ips at 203dpi (6ips at shipment).
- There is no test record of whether ^PR and ~SD take effect on the XT5-40's settings. So check the actual speed against the printer menu setting.
- The Designer's density of 21 and the printer's shipment density of 15 share only the scale range (0–30) and are separate settings. The Designer's number is sent with ~SD.
- The two commands are added only before the first label of each print job, and when the next job starts, they are sent again with the Designer's numbers at that time.
The BPL-D option in the emulation menu
The XT5-40 in the Designer list is a ZPL, 203dpi entry, and according to the spec sheet the printer supports ZPL through BPL-Z (ZPL II) emulation. The emulation menu offers two choices, auto (SLCS, BPL-Z, BPL-E) and BPL-D, and the shipment setting is auto.
If the printer was switched to BPL-D to replace equipment that used DPL commands, BPL-Z, which interprets ZPL, is not in use, so switch it back to auto. After switching back, save the print method and label type in the Troubleshoot window and run Detect media once, and the printer settings will match the Designer.
The 104mm print width and label width
Media 25–114mm wide can be loaded, but the printed width is 104mm. A 100mm-wide label is 800 dots at 203dpi and fits within 832 dots; when using a roll wider than 100mm, enter the actual size as the Designer label width, then check with a test print that no element extends beyond 104mm.

FAQ
- If I set the Designer speed to 14, does it print at 14ips?
- The Designer sends 14 as the ^PR command, but there is no confirmed record of it taking effect on Bixolon printers. 14ips is the printer's maximum, and the actual speed also depends on the data transfer speed and the command combination, so set the speed in the printer menu (2–14ips).
- What changes in the Designer if I switch to a 300dpi or 600dpi model?
- The XT5-43 (300dpi) and XT5-46 (600dpi) are separate entries in the Designer list. Changing the model in the Printer settings window also changes the resolution and recalculates barcode widths, but the editing canvas zoom stays as it is. The default zoom (60% for 300dpi, 30% for 600dpi) is applied when you change the resolution under Printer settings in the ribbon or open a file with Open.
- What if the Windows printer name does not contain the model name?
- Select the printer in the Designer's Printer settings window, then select XT5-40 from the list in the Printer model field. A name you type in yourself is not recognized, and since 203 DPI is the only resolution, it is set when you select the model.
