Bixolon SLP-TX400 label printer
In the GoodLabel Designer Troubleshoot window, the print method step (thermal transfer or direct thermal) appears only when the Printer model field shows SLP-TX400. It is a Bixolon 4-inch thermal transfer and direct thermal printer (203dpi, 108mm, max 7ips); Designer entry: SLP-TX400 (ZPL, 203dpi).

When working with the SLP-TX400 in the GoodLabel Designer Troubleshoot window, the first place to look is the Printer model field at the top of the window. If the Designer recognizes only that the Windows printer name is Bixolon and cannot find the model name, the first entry in the list, XD3-40d (direct thermal only), is filled in, and the print method step for choosing thermal transfer or direct thermal disappears from the screen.
Checking the Printer model field and the print method step
Type TX400 in the Printer model field and SLP-TX400 (ZPL, 203dpi) appears in the search list; as soon as you select it, four steps are laid out on one screen: Print method → Label type → Save to printer → Detect media. The commands each step sends to the printer and the settings it leaves are summarized in a table on the XD5-40t page, confirmed by GoodLabel on an actual unit.
The only difference on the SLP-TX400 is the first step. If a ribbon is loaded, choose Thermal transfer (ribbon); if only thermal media is loaded, choose Direct thermal (no ribbon). Save again in this window every time you change the roll or ribbon and the print method changes.

Only ribbons wound with the ink side out can be loaded, with a width of 33–110mm and a length of up to 300m (0.5-inch and 1-inch cores). The 300m variant of GoodLabel's wax ribbon is wound ink side out, so the direction is correct; choose a width from 40–110mm that is at least the roll width including the liner. When you remove the ribbon and switch to thermal roll labels, set the print method in Printer settings back to Direct thermal, and ^MTD is sent from the first label.
Using a short 74m ribbon or stopping printing at the end of the ribbon requires separate adjustments on the printer (the ribbon length knob, and the ribbon sensor, which is off at shipment); the method is in section 3-4 of the user manual.
Sold configuration
The SLP-TX400 is sold in a single USB connection variant, and the printer's standard interfaces are USB, serial and parallel. The driver to install is the same Bixolon unified driver that the Driver button in the Designer's Printer settings window opens.

FAQ
- Can I use a ribbon roll wound with the ink side in?
- The SLP-TX400 accepts only ribbons wound with the ink side out. If you are not sure of the direction, press the sticky side of a label against the outside of the ribbon and peel it off; if black ink comes off, the ribbon is wound ink side out.
- Do cutter models use the same entry in the Designer?
- The list has only one SLP-TX400 entry, so factory-installed cutter models (SLP-TX40xC) use the same entry. Whether labels are cut after each one is decided by the printer's cutter default setting, not by the Designer.
- What changes in the Designer between the TX400 and the TX403?
- The body is the same; only the head resolution differs, 203dpi versus 300dpi. The TX403's list entry has only 300dpi, so when you change the model, barcode widths are recalculated, the print width drops from 108mm to 105.7mm, and the max speed drops from 7ips to 5ips.
