Zebra GT800 label printer
The GT800 is a Zebra 4-inch thermal transfer and direct thermal printer that takes only ink-side-out ribbons, sold as a 203 dpi unit in USB-only and USB + RS232 variants. Its 3-position switch adds 3 or 6 steps to the density (~SD) GoodLabel Designer sends, so set both together.

The GT800 is a Zebra 4-inch thermal transfer and direct thermal printer that takes only ribbons wound with the ink side out, and it is sold as a 203 dpi unit in two variants, USB only and USB + RS232. The GT800 model in GoodLabel Designer has two resolution buttons, 203 and 300, so for this unit click 203 DPI.
Using Designer density together with the unit's density switch
Each time the Designer prints to the GT800, it sends the density number from the Print window in the ~SD command. The unit's 3-position switch adds to this number, so look at both settings together to work out the darkness that actually prints.

If you raise the Designer density while the switch is at 2 or 3, the two settings stack, and density that is too dark reduces barcode readability. It is less confusing to first set the switch to 1 and adjust with the Designer density alone, then use the switch to correct the darkness that varies slightly from roll to roll.
2-across label rolls and the movable sensor
The GT800's default gap sensor position is offset to one side of the center of the unit. 2-across rolls, with two labels side by side in each row, are also read for labels and gaps in this default position; if you move the sensor to the exact center, it misses the gaps on 2-across rolls.
For black mark rolls, move the reflective sensor, which travels across the full width, to the center of the mark. Also change the Designer media type to match the roll, Gap labels (^MNY) or Black mark (^MNM), and after changing rolls send ~JC once with Auto detect in Troubleshoot.
Loading the GoodLabel wax ribbon on the GT800
- The GoodLabel wax ribbon 300M has the ink side on the outside of the roll, so it matches the GT800's coated-side requirement.
- It is not a genuine Zebra ribbon, so load it on the core adapter included in the box. Check on the roll you received that the core is 25.4 mm ID cardboard and the roll OD is 66 mm or less.
- The GT800's non-Zebra ribbon width range is 33–110 mm, so all eight width variants from 40 to 110 mm fit; among them, choose one wider than the label roll including the liner.
- After loading the ribbon, set the Designer print method to Thermal transfer and ^MTT is sent with the job; when you switch to direct thermal paper, remove the ribbon and change back to Direct thermal (^MTD).
Even with the USB + RS232 variant, select the printer connected by USB in the Designer. Serial printing in the Designer is disabled in the current release. The driver installer is the Zebra universal driver v10 in Downloads.

FAQ
- When I select the GT800 in the Designer, two resolution buttons appear.
- The GT800 model supports both 203 DPI and 300 DPI, so there are two buttons. The sold variant is a 203 dpi unit, so click 203 DPI; if the Windows printer name contains both GT800 and 203dpi, the model and resolution are set at once.
- Can I load an ink-side-in ribbon on the GT800?
- No. The GT800 uses only ribbons with the ink side on the outside of the roll. If you are not sure which side is the ink side, press the adhesive side of a label against the outer surface of the ribbon, peel it off and see whether ink comes off.
- What are the Designer settings for loading direct thermal receipt paper on the GT800?
- Changing the media type to Continuous media sends ^MNN, and the length entered in the label height field is sent with it as ^LL and becomes the length of one piece. For direct thermal receipt paper, set the print method to Direct thermal.
