Bixolon XD5-40d label printer
The XD5-40d is a Bixolon 4-inch direct thermal only printer, the fastest in the XD5-40 series at 178mm/s (7ips), with 203dpi, 108mm width, and USB and USB host as standard. In GoodLabel Designer, select XD5-40d (ZPL, 203dpi), and set continuous media with the media type in Printer settings.

The XD5-40d is the direct thermal only model of the XD5-40 series, without the ribbon mechanism, and prints the fastest in the series at 178mm per second (7ips). A 203dpi head covers a 108mm width, and the standard ports are USB and USB host. It is sold in two variants: one with a choice of connection configuration and one with USB only.

The XD5-40d uses only 203dpi direct thermal printing. The interfaces on the spec sheet are standard USB + USB host, optional USB + USB host + serial + Ethernet (10/100Mbps), and configurations that add wireless LAN or Bluetooth to that.
With any configuration, create a Windows printer with the Bixolon unified driver from the download center, then select that printer in the Designer. A printer connected over Ethernet, as long as it is registered as a Windows printer, has the same Designer settings as USB.
What the Designer's Speed and Density fields send
The number entered in the Speed field of the Print window (1–14, default 3) is added to the head of the first label of each job as ^PR. The Density field (0–30, default 21) is carried in the same place as the ~SD command.
There is no record confirming whether the XD5-40d follows these two commands; the commands GoodLabel confirmed on an actual unit are the media settings on the XD5-40t (firmware V01.50). The printer's max speed is 7ips (178mm/s), and on models with the LCD option, speed (3–7ips at 203dpi) and density (0–30) are changed directly in the setup menu. If the first label is faint or slow, change the two fields and compare with test prints.
Continuous media and black mark rolls
Besides gap, black mark and notch labels, the XD5-40d accepts uninterrupted continuous media and fanfold media. With the media type in the Designer's Printer settings set to Continuous media, ^MNN is sent before the first label along with the Designer label height as ^LL in dots, and the printer feeds that length as it prints.
The Bixolon steps in the Troubleshoot window offer only two choices, Gap labels and Black mark labels, with no continuous media. Because this is a direct thermal only model, the print method step is also skipped, so set up gap and black mark rolls with Label type → Save to printer → Detect media, and set continuous media only in Printer settings.
The black mark sensor is reflective and can be moved, and the transmissive gap sensor is fixed. When you load a black mark roll, move the sensor to the position of the black stripe, then run auto detection.

FAQ
- The Designer does not recognize the XD5-40d because the Windows printer name is different.
- The Designer picks up the model automatically only when a model name from the list is contained in the printer name. Select XD5-40d from the list in the Printer model field of the Printer settings window, and the resolution is set at the same time since 203 DPI is the only option.
- Where is the label length set when printing on continuous media?
- The Designer's label height is the length of one label. Enter the height in mm, and it is converted to dots at 203dpi and sent with the ^LL command; one label can be up to 1,000mm.
- Which model should I look at if I need 300dpi?
- The XD5-43d has a 300dpi head on the same direct thermal only body. Its print width is 105.7mm, its max speed is 5ips, and its entry in the Designer list is XD5-43d (ZPL, 300dpi).
