Bixolon XD5-43d label printer
A Bixolon 4-inch direct thermal only printer for small thermal labels 30–40mm wide with origin, weight and date, at 11.8 dots per mm. Same body as the XD5-40d, with a 105.7mm print width and max 5ips. In GoodLabel Designer, select XD5-43d (ZPL, 300dpi).

For small thermal labels 30–40mm wide that pack country of origin, weight and date onto one label, the XD5-43d's 11.8 dots per mm makes the difference. The body is the same as the direct thermal only XD5-40d, with a print width of 105.7mm (1,248 dots) and a max speed of 5ips (127mm/s), less than the XD5-40d's 108mm and 7ips.
Printing GoodLabel small thermal labels at 300dpi
GoodLabel Designer takes the label size in mm and converts it to dots at 300dpi to draw it. The table below shows how many dots the small sizes of GoodLabel thermal roll labels become on this model.

With three lines of text on a label 20mm tall, each line gets about 53 dots at 203dpi and about 79 dots at 300dpi.
The 1,248-dot print width and the ^PW the Designer sends
The Designer sends the label width in dots with the ^PW command before the first label of a print job. That ^PW is applied to the printer's print width setting is the combination GoodLabel confirmed on the XD5-40t (firmware V01.50); there is no record of a separate check on the XD5-43d.
The printer's print width limit is 1,248 dots (105.7mm) at 300dpi, and the speed menu on LCD option models is 2–5ips at 300dpi, with 4ips at shipment. The Designer's Speed field is sent with the ^PR command, but there is no confirmed record of it taking effect on the printer, so go by this printer's range for speed.
Sold variants and cutter
The variants combine a USB or RS232 connection with or without a cutter. Media is loaded the same way on cutter units, and on LCD option models, change the print mode in the setup menu to Cutter to have it cut. The print data the Designer sends is the same with or without a cutter.
The Designer list entry is XD5-43d (ZPL, 300dpi), and the Windows printer is created with the Bixolon unified driver. The series' shared English manual, XD5-40d user guide, also includes the XD5-43d specifications.

FAQ
- Does the size change when I open a label file made for the XD5-40d on the 300dpi printer?
- The label size in mm stays the same; only the resolution changes. If you open a .glb saved at 203dpi and then select XD5-43d in Printer settings, barcode widths and QR module sizes are recalculated, but this path does not change the screen zoom, so the label may look larger. Change the resolution to 300 under Printer settings in the ribbon, and it is set to the default zoom of 60%.
- Does the XD5-43d have a ribbon mechanism?
- This printer is direct thermal only and has no ribbon mechanism. For labels that need a ribbon, the Designer list has a separate thermal transfer model from the same 300dpi series, the XD5-43t.
- Where do I set density, on the printer or in the Designer?
- The Density field in the Designer's Print window (0–30, default 21) is sent with the ~SD command before the first label of a job, but there is no confirmed record that it takes effect on Bixolon printers. On models with the LCD option, set it directly with Density in the printer menu (0–30, 20 at shipment).
