Toshiba BV420T label printer
The Toshiba BV420T is a 4-inch thermal transfer and direct thermal printer with 3 lights and 2 buttons, no LCD: up to 177.8mm/s at 203dpi and 127mm/s at 300dpi. It is not listed in GoodLabel Designer, so choose the BV420D entry (TPCL, 203/300 DPI) and set thermal transfer in the Toshiba driver.

The Toshiba BV420T is a 4-inch thermal transfer and direct thermal printer with a black body, operated with 3 lights and 2 buttons, without an LCD. The 203dpi model prints up to 177.8mm per second and the 300dpi model up to 127mm. The GoodLabel Designer list does not have the BV420T, but the BV420D entry of the same BV400 family, a direct thermal model, is registered with 203 and 300 DPI, so choose this entry instead and print through the Toshiba driver.
Registering the BV420T with the BV420D entry
- In the printer field, choose the BV420T queue and enter BV420 in the model search; one BV420D entry appears.
- Click the 203 DPI button for the 203dpi model (GS), or 300 DPI for the 300dpi model (TS).
- BV420D is the name of a direct thermal model, but all Toshiba entries pass an image to the driver, so thermal transfer printing with a ribbon also works if you set Print Method on the Stock tab of the driver to Thermal transfer.

Ribbon width for the label width
The ribbon must be at least 5mm wider than the liner so the print width does not shrink, and if the width difference is too large, it wrinkles. The recommended pairs in the BV400T user manual are the 4 rows below.

Load ribbon rolls with 300m wound on a 1-inch core, up to 65mm in outer diameter, with the ink side out. Wax ribbon 300M rolls are wound with the ink side out and meet this requirement. When choosing rolls, also note that the liner width of thermal transfer media goes up to 105mm, narrower than thermal paper, which is accepted up to 118mm.
When the ERROR lamp is on and when it blinks
The ERROR lamp on the front of the BV420T means different things when on and when blinking. Blinking signals that little ribbon remains; steady on means one of the causes in the 7 groups below.

If it turned on right after printing from the designer, first check that Sensor and Label Gap on the Stock tab of the driver and the designer label width and height match the roll. After correcting the conditions, press the PAUSE button to clear the error; if the conditions stay the same, the same lamp turns on again at the next label.

FAQ
- After changing the 203dpi head to 300dpi with the resolution change kit, what do I change in the designer?
- The BV420T swaps 203dpi and 300dpi heads with a separately sold kit. After changing the head, click the DPI button of the BV420D entry again in the designer's Printer settings to match the new head, and barcode widths are calculated for the new resolution.
- The ERROR lamp does not stay on; it only blinks.
- Blinking means little ribbon is left. Printing continues, so have a ribbon roll of the same width ready, and when the ribbon runs out and the lamp changes to steady on, replace it with a new roll.
- Can I print on a 110mm wide label liner with thermal transfer?
- The BV420T's liner width for thermal transfer media goes up to 105mm, so a 110mm liner is out of range. Load a 110mm liner only as thermal paper, which accepts up to 118mm, when printing without a ribbon.
